Vol. 403 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prison Officers' Acts of Bravery.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

170 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Justice if he has any plans to acknowledge the contributions of prison officers in respect of acts of bravery performed in the course of their duty similar to that of members of the Garda Síochána; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At present, prison officers who perform acts of bravery in the course of their duty receive letters of commendation and the details of what they have done are recorded in their personnel records.

As I indicated some time ago, however, I am considering whether there are some means by which greater public recognition might be given to the courage of the officers who perform such acts. I have not yet finalised my thinking on the matter.
