217 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Health if he has any plans to establish or support a telephone system which would be accessible to the deaf; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Equipment is available from Telecom Éireann to enable deaf people communicate by telephone. The National Association for the Deaf, with the support of a grant of £25,000 from the Department of Social Welfare, operate a scheme to assist deaf people with the purchase of the equipment. I have received no proposals for further assistance under this scheme.
