270 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the appropriate action which should be taken by a teacher who suspects that one of his or her pupils has been the victim of abuse at home; and the legal protection, if any, which her Department are prepared to give a teacher who takes the recommended action.
My Department, in conjunction with the National Teachers' Organisation, with the management bodies and the Vocational Parents' Council, are involved in discussions which, it is hoped, will lead to agreed procedural guidelines that will be of assistance to teachers for dealing with allegations or suspicions of child abuse.
When the guidelines are agreed, it is intended to make them available to all schools.
