Vol. 403 No. 4

Written Answers. - Unemployed Teachers.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

291 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the number of teachers who graduated from colleges of education in each of the last six years but have as yet failed to get permanent teaching positions; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The information requested by the Deputy regarding the numbers of teachers who graduated from colleges of education in the last six years is as follows:

Year

No. of graduates

1985

708

1986

636

1987

584

1988

598

1989

575

1990

511

Since some teachers after graduation opt for various careers and some opt for employment abroad it is not possible to compile statistics on the number of teachers who obtain permanent employment in the country.
