52 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Education if she will outline her plans to extend the free books scheme to pupils in infant classes, the only category currently excluded, since book costs in such classes are now substantial and exceed the usual social welfare payment of £11 for the total care of a dependent child.

I am aware of the costs which arise in connection with the purchase of books and other materials at infants' level. My Department's inspectors monitor the situation in this regard. The question of amending the grants scheme to enable assistance to be extended to infants' classes is at present being examined.
