Vol. 403 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Louth School Staffing.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

76 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Education when sanction will be given for the appointment of an extra teacher at Tallanstown national school, County Louth; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The authorised staffing for a national school is determined in accordance with the agreement between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery. Under this agreement the staffing of a school for a particular year is determined by the number of pupils enrolled in the school on 30 September of the previous year.

The authorised staffing for Tallanstown national school for the 1990-91 school year based on the enrolment on 30 September 1989 is principal plus ten assistants. The enrolment at the school on 30 September of the present year was 350.

The overall enrolment can be organised over the current staff without being in breach of my Department's guidelines on maximum class sizes. The board of management have not sought sanction for the appointment of an additional teacher to the school.
