Vol. 403 No. 9

Written Answers. - Voluntary Youth Councils.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

81 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if she has received a report on the activities of the voluntary youth councils set up in a number of centres throughout the country on a pilot basis two years ago; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

82 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the funding provided to the voluntary youth councils set up in a number of centres throughout the country, on a pilot basis, two years ago has been totally inadequate for any worthwhile initiatives; if she has plans to increase that funding; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

83 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if she will outline her plans for the future of the voluntary youth council, set up on a pilot basis, at a number of centres throughout the country two years ago; whether it is intended that these councils should now become permanent; if so, the number intended throughout the country and their locations; and the method of funding.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 81, 82 and 83 together.

My Department have received a number of reports on the operation of the local voluntary youth councils, and are, in general, satisfied with the progress being made.

Accordingly, I intend to allow the continued operation of the nine councils set up in 1988 on a pilot basis, and to proceed with the recognition of further councils on a phased basis, according as resources permit. However, the variety of demands on the annual budget for youth affairs, from which the councils are funded, will not allow me to increase the grant available to such councils.
