Vol. 404 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Invitation to Council of Europe Committee.

John Bruton

Ceist:

11 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Taoiseach if it is proposed to invite the cultural and education committee of the Council of Europe to hold a meeting in Dublin during the period in which Dublin is acting as European City of Culture in 1991.

The Council of Europe's secretariat has advised that while the committee in question met earlier this year in Glasgow, currently designated as "European City of Culture", it is not the policy of that committee to meet regularly in "European Cities of Culture", as the committee is only authorised to hold one meeting outside Paris and Strasbourg per year. The merits of inviting the committee to meet in Dublin will, however, be kept in mind having regard inter alia to the fact that EC Ministers for Culture will be invited to the launching of the project.

I urge the Taoiseach to consider favourably the request to issue an invitation to this most distinguished committee.

I will do that.
