Vol. 404 No. 4

Written Answers. - Collections From Motor Vehicles.

Seán Barrett

Ceist:

269 Mr. S. Barrett asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the dangers being caused by persons collecting moneys for various organisations and charities while motor vehicles are stopped at traffic lights; and if he will outline the steps he intends taking to eliminate these dangers.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the activity described in the question may involve breaches of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 and bye-laws made under that Act and that any such breaches of the law coming to Garda notice will continue to be dealt with.

The Garda authorities have also indicated that they are considering the inclusion of a condition in collection permits issued by Chief Superintendents to charitable organisations to the effect that collecting moneys from vehicles at traffic lights is not permitted.
