Vol. 404 No. 4

Written Answers. - Kilcullen-Newbridge-Kildare By-Pass.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

306 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment when work on the Kilcullen-Newbridge-Kildare by-pass is likely to commence; the number of contracts likely to be involved; the stage of each of the contracts at the present time; if any or all of these contracts are likely to commence in the near future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The major road improvements referred to will be implemented as two separate projects, the Newbridge-Kilcullen by-passes and the Kildare by-pass.

In the case of the Newbridge-Kilcullen project, contract No. 1 involving preliminary drainage works was completed in 1987. Contract No. 2, which comprises the construction of 5.6 kms. of motorway, 4 km. of associated minor roads and ramps, and 7 bridges, including a crossing of the river Liffey, started in October 1990. Tenders have been invited for Contract No. 3 which comprises the remainder of the work. The closing date for receipt of tenders is 24 February 1991.
The Kildare by-pass scheme is scheduled to reach construction in 1993. I understand that Kildare County Council are examining possible road alignments for the proposed by-pass. The development of the scheme, including any necessary consultation with local interests, is a matter for the local authority. A public inquiry will be held in relation to the proposal in due course.
