241 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health the number of forced admissions to psychiatric hospitals each year.
The information requested by the Deputy is compiled by the Health Research Bord on a contract basis for my Department.
The latest information available from the Health Research Board is in respect of the year 1988. In 1988 there were 28,432 admissions to public and private psychiatric hospitals of which 3,440 were involuntary. The number of involuntary admissions for the five year period prior to 1988 are as follows:
