Vol. 404 No. 5

Written Answers. - Victims of Crime.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Ceist:

68 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the plans, if any, he has to help and support the victims of crime; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am very conscious of the distress and loss suffered by the victims of crime and because of this I have taken steps to improve the capability of the Garda Síochána in their crime prevention role.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that all members of the force are expected to help and support the victims of crime and to alleviate the trauma experienced by people in such circumstances and I am aware that they do very valuable work in this area. Apart from the work done in the normal course of duty of all officers, there is an arrangement for the designation of a particular garda who may be contacted by a victim of crime for information or advice in relation to specific aspects of his or her case.

My Department provide an annual grant-in-aid to the Irish Association for Victim Support, a voluntary body established to provide emotional and practical support to victims of crime, and the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal make ex gratia compensation payments to victims of personal criminal injury.
