Vol. 404 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cork Prison.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

99 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the sizeable number of escapes and attempted escapes from Cork Prison in recent times; and the steps which are being proposed by his Department to secure the perimeter wall against such occurrences in the future.

Two prisoners recently escaped from Cork Prison but were retaken within minutes, in the vicinity of the prison. There were no escapes last year nor the previous year. I am not aware of the basis for the Deputy's suggestion that there has been a sizeable number of escapes from the prison in recent times — it is without foundation.

Security arrangements at all prisons are the subject of constant attention. It would not be in the interests of security to discuss specific aspects of the security arrangements in Cork or anywhere else nor to disclose any measures that may be contemplated in that regard.
