Vol. 405 No. 6

Written Answers. - Speed Limit Proposal.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

153 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for the Environment if he will place a speed limit of 30 miles per hour through Kilfeacle village, County Tipperary, in view of the threat to pedestrians; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Road Traffic (Speed Limits) County of Tipperary South Riding Regulations 1990 which were signed by me in July 1990 gave effect to proposals drawn up by Tipperary South Riding County Council, with Garda concurrence, for the revision of speed limits throughout the county.

While the council, in their submission, proposed a 30 mph speed limit on the N74 at Kilfeacle village, my technical advisers did not consider this to be necessary having regard to both the accident record at the location and the lack of development along the road in question.

While it is my policy to implement local authority proposals as far as is possible, I have reserved particular discretion in relation to national roads in view of the importance of ensuring uniformity of treatment throughout the network and of ensuring that controls do not adversely affect the level of service or safety on such roads.
