Vol. 405 No. 8

Written Answers. - Allegations of Human Rights Violations.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

37 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to allegations of continuing human rights violations in Iran involving summary execution, torture and political imprisonment; and the steps, if any, taken by Ireland bilaterally or through the EC to voice our concerns about these human rights violations.

I am aware of the allegations in regard to the human rights situation in Iran to which the Deputy refers.

Together with our partners in the Twelve, we have made known our concern to the Iranian authorities on a number of occasions; most recently at the last United Nations General Assembly, at the Commission on Human Rights currently taking place in Geneva and bilaterally during my official visit to Iran in November 1990.
