Vol. 405 No. 8

Written Answers. - Road Signs.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

52 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Environment whether his attention has been drawn to the problem arising from road signposts which are frequently tampered with and then cause tremendous problems to people travelling in particular areas whether they be tourists or travellers unfamiliar with the area; if his attention has further been drawn to a recent Irish invention of a type of signpost which cannot be tampered with in this way and which would eliminate this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

All directional signs now being erected by local authorities, in accordance with the specification issued by my Department, must incorporate an anti-rotational device to prevent them being moved out of position.

I am not aware of the invention referred to in the question but, if the necessary details are submitted, I will be pleased to have it examined.

It is, of course, an offence to tamper with traffic signs.
