Vol. 405 No. 9

Written Answers. - General Medical Service Scheme.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

186 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Health the cost of the general medical service scheme for the years 1988, 1989 and 1990; and if he has satisfied himself with the operation of the scheme.

The gross expenditure relevant to services provided by doctors and pharmacists participating in the General Medical Service Scheme for the years in question are as follows: 1988 — £137.3 million; 1989 — £158.1 million; 1990 — £168.0 million (latest estimate).

A review of the first year's operation of the revised contract for participating doctors, conducted by representatives of the Irish Medical Organisation and Management under the Chairmanship of Mr. John Horgan, has just been completed.
I am at present considering the report.
