Vol. 406 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Offences.

James C. Tunney

Ceist:

76 Mr. Tunney asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline, in respect of the past six months, the number of summonses which have issued in respect of unlighted bicycles in the Dublin area; and whether, in the interest of the offenders and other users of the roadways, the campaign should be intensified.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the statistics to hand are annual statistics and that for the year ending 31 December 1990, a total of 1,185 summonses in respect of alleged breaches of the lighting regulations governing pedal cycles were applied for by members of the Force in the Dublin metropolitan area.

I am also informed by the Garda authorities that the Force endeavour to persuade cyclists to comply with the law in this regard by way of prosecutions, cautions and advice. Neighbourhood gardaí, juvenile liaison officers and gardaí generally also avail of opportunities such as visits to schools, youth clubs, community centres, etc., to promote greater road safety consciousness among young people.
