Ceist:

85 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Health the percentage of the population in County Wexford which hold medical cards under the auspices of the SouthEastern Health Board, at the present time and for each of the last ten years; and the relevant national and regional figures for the same period.

Statistics regarding medical cards are collated by the General Medical Services (Payments) Board. The figures requested by the Deputy are as follows:

The fluctuations which have occurred in recent years are due, in the main, to the removal of invalid medical cards from the registers of all health boards in preparation for the implementation of the new contract for doctors participating in the general medical services scheme.
