Ceist:254 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications the estimated average cost of moving one ton of freight at current prices (a) by road and (b) by rail; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been informed by CIE that on the basis of the most recent data available the average cost of moving one tonne of freight by rail is £6.36. Information on the average cost of moving freight by road by either private haulage operators or own account hauliers is not available to my Department.
