I have consistently encouraged Aer Lingus to develop linkages with foreign airlines with a view to improving access to international markets as well as achieving additional earnings in areas such as maintenance, overhaul and training. These objectives can be achieved in a number of ways besides minority cross investments, such as, for example, joint venture agreements and service contracts.
Aer Lingus have been very successful in developing such linkages. They will continue to seek out new opportunities for co-operation with international airlines. The question of a minority cross investment has not yet arisen. However, I can assure the Deputy that, should any such proposal emerge, I will give it very careful consideration.
