Vol. 407 No. 6

Written Answers. - Post-Primary Cycle.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

190 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education her views on whether the decision not to allow post primary schools to do the leaving certificate course over a three year cycle is a breach of the agreement with the teachers' unions reached in the negotiations on the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

The Programme for Economic and Social Progress states that a six-year cycle of post-primary education will be introduced for all pupils commencing their post-primary cycle in 1991.

One of the stated objectives of the transition year programme is that it should provide pupils with "a year of study free from the pressures and constraints imposed by a tightly structured examination programme" and that "the emphasis should be on developing their social awareness and social competence".
