Vol. 407 No. 6

Written Answers. - Roads Expenditure.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

139 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment the current level of costings per kilometre or mile or on any other unitised basis for (a) national primary construction, (b) resurfacing of national primary and secondary routes, (c) restrengthening of regional or county roads and (d) resurfacing of regional or county roads.

In carrying out the assessment of long term road development needs which underpins the road development measures contained in the operational programme on peripherality, my Department used the following average construction costs (1988 prices) for projects on national roads where more detailed estimates were not available: Single Carriageway Roads — £1 million per km; Dual Carriageway Roads— £2 million per km; Motorways — £3.0 million per km.

It should be noted that the unit costs for these works depend on a number of factors i.e. topography, type of soil, the number of structures (bridges, underpasses) involved. Because of these variable factors the figures quoted above would not necessarily be applicable to any particular scheme.

The following are current estimated costs of the other types of road works mentioned:

1. Resurfacing of National Routes— Single Carriageway Roads — £5-£10 per m²; Dual Carriageway Roads — £10-£12 per m²; Motorways — £10-£16 per m².

2. Strengthening of Regional-County Roads— £5 per m².

3. Surface dressing of Regional-County Roads— £2 per m².
