Vol. 407 No. 6

Written Answers. - Driving Test Service Funding.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

138 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the current resources being spent on the driving test service and whether he has any proposals to increase this; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The cost of the driver testing service in 1991 will be approximately £3,075,000. This includes salaries, travel and subsistence, pensions contributions, rent, heating and cleaning of premises and overheads. This sum supports headquarters administrative staff and a testing corps of 79 testers, eight supervisory testers and one chief supervisor. This team of testers, which is almost twice the number operating this time last year, includes 19 temporary testers recruited specially to eliminate the backlog of test applications. I see no need to increase that number.
