Ceist:

45 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that house registrations with the national house building guarantee scheme have reduced by 2 per cent for the year ended 1989-90; the action he proposes to take to stimulate building activity in the housing sector having regard to the increasing demand for housing; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The reduction of about 2 per cent in registrations in 1990 compared to 1989 has to be viewed in the context of a 40 per cent increase in new registrations in 1989 compared with 1988 and an 8 per cent increase in total new house completions in 1990 compared with 1989.

A Plan for Social Housing published on 14 February 1991 contains a range of proposals which will stimulate activity in the housing sector.
