Vol. 407 No. 9

Written Answers. - Death of Wicklow Girl.

Liam Kavanagh

Ceist:

65 Mr. Kavanagh asked the Minister for the Environment if he will carry out an investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of a young girl (details supplied) in County Wicklow who was drowned in a septic tank serving the county council estate where she lived in August 1990.

I deeply regret this tragedy.

While formal investigation of it would not be appropriate to the Minister for the Environment, I have already informed the Deputy that my Department have sought a detailed report from Wicklow County Council on the circumstances involved and this is being assessed. I will be writing to local authorities generally about the need for secure management of installations and works, particularly having regard to the safety of young children.
