Vol. 407 No. 9

Written Answers. - Use of Unleaded Petrol.

Tomás MacGiolla

Ceist:

74 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for the Environment the total proportion of petrol sold in this country which is lead free; if he has any plans to increase the consumption of lead free fuels; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Sales of unleaded petrol have been rising steadily in response to a continued promotional campaign organised by my Department and the oil industry. Unleaded now accounts for over 23 per cent of total petrol sales. Recent and prospective EC Directives on vehicle emissions will ensure that, from 1993, all new cars will require the using of unleaded petrol only.
