Vol. 408 No. 4

Written Answers. - Youghal (Cork) School.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

200 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education if she has received a letter from Grange national school, Youghal, County Cork outlining the problems in the school and seeking the retention of a third assistant; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I recently met the chairman and principal and other representatives of this school regarding the staffing matters.

A letter requesting the retention of the third assistant for 1991-92 was given to me at that meeting.

As the Deputy will be aware, the staffing of national schools for a particular year is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery.

The enrolment at Grange national school on 30 September 1990 was 61 which warrants a staff of principal plus one assistant for the 1991-92 school year. The second assistant teacher has been placed on the diocesan panel for redeployment to another school from 1 September 1991.
