Vol. 408 No. 4

Written Answers. - Response to Long-Term Unemployment.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

91 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Labour the areas in Cork which will be earmarked for area backed response to long term unemployment companies as outlined in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress; if he will outline the organisations which will be involved in these companies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government statement of 22 March 1991 set out the 12 pilot areas which have been selected to participate in the area-based response to long term unemployment on the basis of recommendations by the Central Review Committee. Cork north city was one of the areas selected.

In discussions with members of the national level team established to act on behalf of the Central Review Committee to organise the project, statutory, community and business interests in Cork have suggested that the areas to be earmarked should initially concentrate on the Gurranabraher, Knocknaheeny, Blackpool and Mayfield areas.

Arrangements are being made with these interests to establish an interim local company to get the project initiated. In that context, community interests have nominated five persons from the four areas referred to and a representative from Cork Community Development Institute to be their six nominees to the board of the interim company. The local interests have requested that FÁS, CERT, City of Cork VEC, Cork Corporation, the Department of Social Welfare and the IDA be represented on the board, and that the Southern Health Board be represented at meetings, and this is being arranged. The remaining six board members will be nominated by the social partners — the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (3) and the employer organisations (3).

As soon as all the nominations are received a meeting of the interim board will be arranged.
