Vol. 408 No. 8

Written Answers. - Hospital Nursing and Clerical Hospital Staff.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

92 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if he will outline in respect of acute hospitals the proportion of (a) nursing staff and (b) clerical staff who are temporary; if he will further outline the conditions necessary for them to be made permanent; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In acute hospitals temporary nursing staff currently account for 11.75 per cent of wholetime equivalent staff. Temporary clerical staff account for 12.47 per cent of wholetime equivalent staff in the same hospitals. Both these figures are exclusive of locum cover.

My Department's personnel policy for 1991 facilitates agencies in improving the ratio of permanent to temporary staff. Permanent posts are generally filled by competition following public advertisement.
