95 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education the amount of higher education grants paid in respect of (a) fees, (b) maintenance grants in respect of students living within 15 miles of a designated college, (c) maintenance grants in respect of other students; and the number of students who benefit from each of these schemes.
The statistical information in the format requested by the Deputy is not available in my Department.
The latest available information on student numbers in all sectors in receipt of higher education grants broken down in categories comparable with those requested by the Deputy relate to the 1988-89 academic year. The data are shown in the following tabular statement.
The total number of students in receipt of support under the higher education grants scheme in 1988-89 academic year was 13,036.
