Vol. 408 No. 8

Written Answers. - Trinity House (Dublin) Incidents.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

96 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education if she will make a statement on the most recent incident in Trinity House, Lusk, County Dublin where youths escaped onto the roof on the evening of 9 May 1991.

Every effort is made to ensure that arrangements at Trinity House, Lusk, County Dublin, and at other similar institutions are such that violent behaviour and abscondments are kept to the very minimum.

Happily the incident referred to by the Deputy did not result in injury to either the staff or the boys concerned and the damage caused to the building was minimal. By arrangement with my colleague, Mr. Ray Burke, TD, Minister for Justice, a full security audit is already in progress at Lusk, County Dublin, in order to determine whether changes to current security arrangements are necessary and I expect a report on this audit shortly.

Ceist:

97 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education the number of staff on whom assaults have occurred in Trinity House, Lusk, County Dublin in (a) 1990 and (b) to date in 1991; and the actions which have been taken to reduce the number of these assaults.

Seven staff members were assaulted in 1990. The number of assaults to date in 1991 is 18.

I am very concerned at the increase in the level of assaults in recent months. By arrangement with my colleague, Mr. Ray Burke, TD, Minister for Justice, a full security audit is already in progress at Lusk in order to determine whether modifications to current arrangements are necessary. I expect a report on this audit in the near future. The problem to which the Deputy refers will be addressed in this context.
