Vol. 409 No. 1

Written Answers. - British Company's Involvement in Irish Telecommunications.

Mervyn Taylor

Ceist:

162 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he has had any discussions with the British telecommunications company Cable and Wireless about their possible involvement in any aspect of telecommunications in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As part of my job as Minister with responsibility for communications matters I have informal contracts from time to time with the leading personalities in the telecommunications area. I recently met informally the managing director of Cable and Wireless but we had no formal or substantive discussions on the company's possible involvement in telecommunications in Ireland. I might add that Cable and Wireless (Ireland) Ltd. hold a licence from me under section 111 (2) of the Postal & Telecommunications Services Act, 1983 to supply, instal and maintain telecommunications equipment.
