163 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he will give details of any application he has received from Eircell for approval for price changes in their products; if he will outline his reply to same; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
As part of their recent package of tariff proposals, Telecom Éireann proposed to reduce call charges for the Eircell service by 10 per cent and rental charges by 20 per cent. These changes would result in a reduction in revenue of about £3 million in a full year and I asked the company not to implement them as I felt that a reduction in revenue of this order would benefit a greater number of people if applied to reducing trunk call charges and expanding local call areas.
