Vol. 409 No. 1

Written Answers. - Grain Sales.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

50 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the total amount of grain, from the 1990 harvest, which was sold into intervention; the price which was paid for it; the amount of this grain which has since been sold out of intervention and the price at which it was sold; and the total capacity in Ireland for the intervention storage of grain.

From the 1990 harvest, some 90,000 tonnes of Irish grain, barley only, was sold into intervention. The prices paid for this ranged from £132.07 to £138.78 per tonne, depending on quality and the month of entry into intervention.

Some 8,000 tonnes of this barley has been sold to date onto the home market at an average price of £143.69 per tonne.

The estimated capacity of storage in Ireland that is suitable for grain intervention purposes is 800,000 tonnes.
