Vol. 409 No. 3

Written Answers. - Radioactive Waste Disposal Site.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

58 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Energy if he has made any representations to the British authorities regarding plans by British Nuclear Fuels to extend the life of their radioactive waste dump near Sellafield; if he has received any response to these representations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I expressed my concerns about the decision of the UK authorities to extend the life of the Drigg radioactive waste disposal site at the time the decision was announced last September. These concerns have been conveyed to the British authorities. I am informed that the decision in relation to Drigg has not changed the intention of the British authorities to develop a deep underground repository for radioactive waste. I am also informed that waste will be compacted into drums and stored in concrete trenches at Drigg which will be capped and earthed over instead of the former procedure of burying waste directly in earthen trenches.
