Vol. 409 No. 3

Written Answers. - Merchant's Quay Drugs Project.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

62 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the Merchant's Quay project which has been established to deal with the huge numbers of drug users who are HIV positive, and to the financial difficulties which the project is experiencing due to a scarcity of funds from private sources and charitable trusts; if he is in a position to recommend that moneys be made available from his Department's Estimate or from the proceeds of the national lottery to assist the project; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government Strategy to Prevent Drug Misuse, which I launched recently, calls for the objective evaluation of all existing and new drug treatment services in the context of regional requirements which, in turn, will be linked to the determination of the appropriate levels of support and funding for such services. I intend to commence this evaluation process without delay and future decisions relating to the funding of all drug related services including the Merchants Quay Project, will be made in that context.
