Vol. 409 No. 3

Written Answers. - Mammography Unit.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

63 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Health the reason a mammography unit, installed in Castlebar General Hospital, has not been used for over 18 months; if he will outline the cost of this unit; if he will consult immediately with the Western Health Board to make arrangements to have this unit put into use; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Provision of mammography services in Castlebar General Hospital is a matter for the Western Health Board in the first instance. The mammography equipment which cost £145,000 has not been operational for approximately 18 months due to difficulties experienced in recruiting radiographers at Castlebar General Hospital. I am glad to report that the approved complement of radiographers are now in post and currently undertaking training in operating the mammography equipment. I understand that the health board propose to commence use of the equipment by mid-June 1991.
