Vol. 409 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cork National School.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

119 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding the proposed extension to Our Lady of Lourdes national school, Ballinlough Road, Cork, for which a grant was approved in 1985.

Our Lady of Lourdes national school, Ballinlough Road, Cork, has six teachers and accommodation in six permanent classrooms. Because of the present policy of providing only essential classroom accommodation, the general purpose rooms are not being grant aided. The local schools inspector will be asked to re-examine the situation in relation to the provision of reduced ancillary accommodation. However, it does appear that the school has sufficient classrooms and ancillary facilities to cater for current pupil numbers.

The case will be further considered when the inspector's report and recommendations have been received.

Ceist:

120 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education the position regarding the appointment of an additional teacher to Our Lady of Lourdes national school, Ballinlough Road, Cork.

As the Deputy will be aware, the staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery.

As this school had an enrolment of 194 pupils on 30 September 1990, the authorised staffing of the school for the 1991-92 school year is a principal and five assistants.

According, the enrolment necessary to qualify for the appointment of an additional assistant teacher was not reached.
