Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Disabled Employees Statistics.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

45 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for the Environment the numbers of persons employed by local authorities who are disabled; the percentage of the local government workforce this represents; if he has any plans to increase the proportion of disabled persons employed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Based on returns supplied by local authorities, there were 167 disabled persons employed by them at the end of 1990. This number represents 0.56 per cent of the total local authority workforce, including all officer and non-officer grades.

The question of increasing the number of disabled persons employed by local authorities will be pursued under the terms of theProgramme for Economic and Social Progress which commits the Government to increasing on a gradual and sustained basis the number of people with disabilities employed in the public service.
