Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Taxi Plates.

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

46 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the situation in relation to the issue of taxi plates; the number of additional plates which are intended to issue this year; whether people can resell these plates once they are issued; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Taxi licences are issued by the Garda Commissioner. Under the regulations currently in force, it is a matter for the appropriate local authority to determine the number of taxi licences which may be issued in any taximeter area. Subject to compliance with the general conditions relating to the issue of taxi licences, there are no specific restrictions on the transfer of a licence from one person to another.

I have recently established an interdepartmental committee to carry out a fundamental review of the legislation and procedures governing the control and operation of all small public services, including taxis.
