Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Single Taxpayers' Income Tax Liability.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

71 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline (1) the percentage of single workers who pay income tax at a rate higher than the standard rate and (2) the number who paid at a rate higher than the standard rate in the tax years from 1987 to 1990 inclusive.

It is estimated that some 43.5 per cent of single taxpayers pay income tax at a rate higher than the standard rate in the current (1991/92) tax year. It is estimated that in the tax years 1987/88, 1988/89, 1989/90 and 1990/91, 205,900, 163,900, 172,000 and 172,400 single taxpayers respectively paid tax at a rate higher than the standard rate. The figures for 1989/90, 1990/91 and 1991/92 are provisional estimates and are subject to revision.
