Vol. 409 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Limerick School Amalgamation.

Michael Ferris

Ceist:

35 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education if she has reconsidered the application from the De La Salle Brothers and Presentation Sisters in Hospital, County limerick, for an amalgamated post-primary school, following successful local fund raising efforts; if she will give approval to the proposals; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

There are two post-primary schools in Hospital, the Presentation/De La Salle secondary school with an enrolment of 606 and the vocational school with an enrolment of 234.

An extension had been approved by my Department for the Presentation/De La Salle secondary school in Hospital in order to facilitate the location of the school in one campus.

However, in the light of my Department's rationalisation policy, I have made it clear that capital funding can only be provided for a building project in Hospital post-primary centre in the context of a single school development.

I understand that there is a board measure of agreement between the two school managements on this issue. My Department are now examining how a single school for Hospital could best be developed.
