Vol. 409 No. 8

Written Answers. - Computer in the Classroom Project.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

61 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Education if, in relation to the computer in the classroom project, undertaken by a supermarket chain (details supplied), a computer company (details supplied) and primary schools, she will outline (1) whether she was involved in prior discussions and negotiations with any parties to this project, (2) whether her sanction was required for the participation of schools in this commercial promotion and (3) her views on whether young children are being used by this supermarket as an instrument to force parents to shop in these branches; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the computer company involved received an under-whelming review in the computer trade press recently; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

This particular promotion was brought to my attention by the store concerned. Following a meeting with the deputy marketing director of the store, I indicated verbally and in writing my strong reservations regarding such a promotion. My reservations were based on the educational sensitivities of the particular marketing strategy being used and I indicated that I, or my Department, could not be associated with the scheme.

I have also had discussions regarding such schemes with the Irish National Teachers Organisations, and while I appreciate that it is open to individual companies to undertake such promotions, I will be reissuing a circular to schools for the new school year on such matters.
