Ceist:

61 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Health if he is concerned about the non-availability of VHI cover to couples opting for a home birth to cover the services of a midwife; and if he will contact the VHI with a view to rectifying this matter.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a question from Deputy Richard Bruton on Thursday, 13 June 1991 when I indicated that the overall position in relation to home births here is being reviewed by my Department at present in the light of various reports and research findings both here and abroad.

Any decision on the procedures to be covered is primarily a matter for the VHI. If as a result of the review, there is aprima facie case for extending cover to home births, I will convey that view and relevant supporting evidence to the VHI.
