Vol. 410 No. 2

Written Answers. - Reverting to Original Irish Alphabet.

Michael Ferris

Ceist:

213 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the failure of the anglicisation of the Irish alphabet, she will consider restoring the dignity of the written Irish by reverting to the original Irish alphabet which has no letter H and return the original seimhihe (.) and original lettering before it is lost to future generations.

I do not intend reverting to the original Irish alphabet referred to in the question, or of restoring the original séimhiú. The Roman script has been in general use in Government Departments, by publishers and by the press for more than 30 years. It has been the norm in schools since 1958 and its use has been regarded as beneficial to pupils and learners. I am not aware of any significant reservations among the public about it. There is a tendency in modern languages generally to accept the Roman script.
