77 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of women who have brought claims against his Department as a result of the European Court of Justice decision in the Cotter and McDermott case on the application of the EC Directive on equal treatment for men and women on Social Welfare.
No further claims have been brought in the courts against the Department as a result of the court decision referred to.
A number of queries and applications for additional payments apparently related to that court decision have been received in the Department and are at present under consideration. It is unlikely, however, that the Department will be in a position to process them until the outcome of other related cases currently before the courts are to hand.
