Vol. 410 No. 6

Written Answers. - Alleged Protection Rackets.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

88 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the supporting evidence which is available in relation to protection rackets, particularly in the Dublin area; and if he will further outline the findings of any Garda investigations in this matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that from time to time allegations of a general nature have been made about the existence of protection rackets particularly in the Dublin area. All such allegations have been fully investigated by the Garda but no evidence of the existence of protection rackets has been found. The Garda authorities inform me that they have invariably found that persons making such allegations, when interviewed, have indicated that they were not in a position to produce supporting evidence.

Any person with information relating to protection rackets should bring it to the attention of the Garda authorities so that the matter can be fully investigated.
