Ceist:

93 Dr. Lee asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí who, in an average year, retire on grounds other than the compulsory age limit.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 92 and 93 together.

The number of members of the Garda Síochána who retired on age and other grounds between 1 January and 1 July 1991 was 91.

The number of retirements from the Garda Síochána can vary considerably from year to year and an average figure could be misleading. The number of members who retired in recent years on grounds other than reaching the compulsory retirement age has ranged as follows: 135 in 1985, 133 in 1986, 151 in 1987, 211 in 1988 and 150 in 1989. These figures include members who retired within a short period of their compulsory retirement date. By comparison, the figure for retirements other than on compulsory age grounds in 1990 — the first full year in which the temporary extension of the compulsory retirement age from 57 years to 60 years for members of garda, sergeant and inspector rank was available — was 100.
