Vol. 411 No. 5

Written Answers. - Controls on Ownership of Vehicles.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

109 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to introduce legislation to provide for a minimum legal age for the ownership of a motor car.

Under the Road Traffic Acts, it is an offence for a person to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle in a public place unless he holds a current driving licence to drive the vehicle in question. The minimum age for obtaining a driving licence for a motor car is 17 years. In so far as vehicles generally are concerned, the provisions of the Road Traffic Acts are primarily concerned with controlling their use in public places and proposals for amending legislation are currently being prepared to strengthen the powers of the Garda in this regard. However, I have no proposals to introduce controls on the ownership of vehicles.
